How to Play Back TV Recordings on a PC or Laptop

Some people have asked over the years how they can play back their TV recordings that they have made on a PC or laptop. Some boxes are better for this than others and we outline the procedures involved below.

Once you have made your TV recording onto a USB memory stick or portable hard drive the next thing to do is to either try and play the recording back directly from the storage device on the PC or laptop or just copy the recorded file directly to the PC or laptop.

What Program Will Work for Playing Back the TV Recording?

The thing to consider whether you are copying the file over to the PC or trying to play it directly off the storage device is what program will I use?

VLC Media Player

The best one available out there and will work with the vast majority of boxes is a program called VLC Media Player. If you do not have this on your PC, simply google it, download the latest version and install it.

Pot Player

If it will not play back using VLC Media Player, the next best one is a program called Pot Player. We have found in tests that generally speaking, files that will not play back in VLC Media Player will generally work in Pot Player. Again just google Pot Player and you can download the latest version and install it on your PC.

If VLC Media Player & Pot Player Don't Work?

There are some cases however that certain boxes produce recordings that are ONLY playable back on the box itself. In this case, there is nothing you can do really as the recorded file is neither playable on a PC or is not convertable into a format that could be played either.
