How to get Freesat and DTT – my choices

I got an interesting email from a customer in wicklow on his Free-to-air choices.

Summary of Question:

  • Where I live: Co. Wicklow

  • Currently have:

    • i have a roof mounted aerial pointed at wales fitted 14 years ago  (Get the BBCs etc from the UK)

    • Humax PVR freesat+ receiver

    • Sky subscription

  • Want to:

    • an dtt/freesat box.

    • Get Rid of Sky

  • Customer question: Do I need a VHF Aerial, UHF aerial and a Diplexer

Proposed Solution

Part 1 TV Aerial for the Irish Channels

1A. Irish Analogue Channels (RTE 1, 2, TV3, TG4)

The aerial setup you suggested  (vhf, ufh aerial & diplexer)  is for analogue TV

1B. Irish Digital Channels (RTE 1, 2, TV3(test card), TG4, RTE News)

For the new DTT service the setup is much simpler  (only need a UHF Aerial)

Part 2  Satellite Dish

PART 3 Satellite (& DTT) Receivers

You have a number of choices to get the BBC etc for Free

or Purchase a Combo Satellite & DTT Receiver

How to install a DiSEqC switch to combine 2 satellite dishes

How to run 2 satellite dishes to a single satellite receiver

It is common to want to combine the output of different satellites onto a single satellite receiver. For example by combining the feed from 2 satellite dishes  pointed at Astra 2 and Hotbird. This is achieved using a Diseqc switch which takes 2 satellite feeds and produces a single output.

Benefits of using a Diseqc switch

  • It combines the output of multiple satellites into a single feed
  • It allows for the switching between satellites from your remote control

EQUIPMENT such a system would typically contain

How to Install

Part A – connect up the dishes, diseqc and receiver

  1. Firstly align both satellite dishes using a satellite finder
  2. Run a feed from a satellite cable which has been terminated with an f-connector from each of the satellite dishes to the Diseqc switch and connect them to ‘LNB A’ and ‘LNB B’ repectively.
  3. Run a satellite cable from the Diseqc switch to the Triax SR110
  4. It is important to ensure that the satellite receiver is wiped clean as the channels must be tuned, in conjunction with the diseqc switch for it to operate correctly.

Part B – programme up the box

  1. Turn on the Triax SR110 receiver
